If you think about it, without optimizing all the components before and after the head along with your valve and port job, you could simply be adding an even bigger ...

A rough - ish intake is good. Polished intake is bad. Polished exhaust port really only delays the carbon soot build up as it takes longer for it to adhere to the smooth surface. Polished combustion chamber = what ever in the big picture.
